TEACHER TESTIMONIALS

For the Ba-Boom! Drumming Program, 2012

LTYENTYE APURTE CATHOLIC EDUCATION CENTRE (LACEC), SANTA TERESA

The Ba-Boom! drumming program emphasizes team-work. Attention is oriented towards working as a team.

Behaviour has improved and drumming can be used as a motivation.

It’s an opportunity to link music and maths.

The vocabulary of music enhances spoken literacy.

Teachers express satisfaction with the program and the discipline involved.

There is a rise in the students’ self-esteem.

PRINCIPAL, LACEC

All of the children in the school have been involved in the drumming program. They have learnt how much concentration and commitment is required to play drums well.

This can be related back to the classroom.

Children like to feel successful at school.

Drumming has given all of the children the opportunity to be successful at something other than numeracy and literacy.

The rise in confidence levels and self-pride has been fantastic. Nearly all of the kids at school have now performed in front of the school.

A music program would allow students to express themselves and develop in areas other than literacy and numeracy.

Teachers can link the content being taught in music back to the classroom.

The results we’ve seen show how worthwhile the drumming program is at LACEC.

GRADE 3

The drumming has allowed the kids to develop talents and especially confidence when people are observing them.

In earlier years, they were crippled by shyness. We cannot work hard enough on this aspect of social life.

Generally, a very positive innovation. Thanks for coming.

The delivery of the Ba-Boom! Drumming Program was very effective due to the high expectations of the teachers; the precise instructions given and the “graded” success that the students enjoy.

The children of 6 – 7 years of age realize that focus and good listening are essential for success. They are highly motivated to “do their part” and to enjoy the rewards. The repetition and constant feedback enhance their performance.

This is an excellent music program as it embodies “best practice” in terms of discipline, listening and active participation. Children learn the language and rhythm of drumming that engages their senses and brain function.

Working together is essential to the performance – this appears to truly be “in tune” with the cultural way.

GRADE 2

This program helps these students to become creative and collaborative learners. The emphasis on group work is well-structured and progressive; it keeps them moving on.

Listening skills definitely improved, and Ba-Boom! make it very clear with their instructions and what is expected. With behaviour issues, they don’t give them time to misbehave! The students are working together as a team and they realize this.

Ba-Boom! provides a program that helps these children to work at concentrating. It is helping these students with their confidence and is to me, as a teacher, a “real” character building experience.

Ba-Boom! do not set up students for failure!! I love to see these students so engaged and have very much enjoyed the drumming!

GRADE 4/5

Ba-Boom!’s Drumming Program was effective with their clear instructions, expectations, discipline and repetition. Going over and breaking things down into achievable parts/sections. An intensive over the two weeks also reinforces things well.

The program gives those with interest/talent a chance to ‘shine’ at school, particularly those who struggle in class. Excellent for concentration as the students cannot be successful at drumming without concentrating. Hopefully some of this can transfer to other areas of learning.

The Drumming Program complements current educational agendas through strengthening concentration, understanding rhythm/beat (assists with motor skills), contributes to relaxation/well-being/feelings of success, it can be used as a motivation and improves the students’ ability to present themselves (perform) to others outside their comfort zone.

I am new to the school but think that the whole program is fantastic. There is a buzz around the school during these two weeks and it’s a wonderful skill for the children to carry on throughout the year.

ALANA MURPHY

GRADE 7

The Ba-Boom! Drumming Program provides excellent motor skill training, brain development, “feel-good” factors, good self-discipline and good school representation.

We have observed good team development, improvement in the ability to concentrate for longer periods, immediate pick-up of ‘mistakes’ due to lack of concentration and an overcoming of the illusion of ‘shame’ as ‘errors’ are pointed out quickly in a nurturing method.

With music comes pride and self-respect. A program like Ba-Boom!’s allows kids to choose between art, sport or music.

Keep up the good work, Ba-Boom! We love your management skills with the kids.

We would love to see the MacDonnell Shire incorporate the Ba-Boom! Drumming Program over into the school holidays. Then they might build a music park from recycled materials!

                  YIRARA COLLEGE, KINTORE CAMPUS

Over the last three weeks we’ve had the Ba-Boom! Drumming Program running at our College.

Engaging middle school students is difficult at the best of times, yet Shon and Svetlana seem to have done it with relative ease. Initially, as can be expected, the program took a session or two to settle into the liking and ability of the students, but once this was achieved, it really took off well.

The rhythmic patterns and the very nature of the drumming is excellent for the students’ concentration and engagement. It is also very good for basic co-ordination and of course, team-work. Furthermore, it unearthed the latent talents many of our students have hitherto been unable to manifest.

By the end of the sessions all our students showed a very distinct improvement in their drumming skills-which proved to us that they have been effectively taught. Finally, the whole program culminated with our students presenting a simple concert to the primary school children of the community.

Overall, as educators we have been very impressed with the program. We feel it has not only been beneficial for the students as a college but has also done wonders for most of their individual self-esteem.

WALUNGURU SCHOOL, KINTORE

The program has been highly effective. It has engaged students through an exciting range of activities aimed at improving musical and motor skills.

The students that have participated in the Ba-Boom! drumming program have been strongly encouraged to develop concentration skills that would allow them to participate as team members leading to a public performance. The students have very much been on task.

An ongoing program could be further developed in its’ numeracy and literacy components.

Remote students respond to music programs with a high degree of excitement and engagement over the course of a program’s journey.

The teachers are particularly pleased to see the structure and management of the sessions aligned to prevailing school practices.

PRINCIPAL, WALUNGURU SCHOOL

Shon and Svetlana came to Kintore and spent time with my class.

I asked Shon to integrate the drumming into my conservation/rainforest theme. Shon did an excellent job, the children were interested and involved. The drumming sessions required the children to listen, think and co-operate.

I was very pleased with the outcomes.

Shon and Svetlana were able to organize my large class (16-18 kids) into a coherent group.

Not easy!

GRADE 6

Very effective, tough approach, good outcomes.

My class has difficulties in concentrating, keeping up and doing as they are told, so it has been a good exercise for them.

GRADES 4/5

The kids enjoyed the experience. It forced the kids to behave in order to participate. They also had to concentrate to keep up.

The Ba-Boom! drumming program gave the kids a chance to develop their listening and rhythm skills.
